Higher airline fees 'damage travellers' credit card protection'

Airline passengers may lose the protection of paying for flights by credit card as prices soar, it has been claimed.

Lisa Bachelor wrote in the Observer that as airlines up their charges for paying by credit card, more people are using debit instead.

This offers less protection in the event of the airline collapsing or a customer dispute being made.

The Observer found that two return flights for two people costing £500 could carry a credit card charge of almost £20, with Jet2 the most expensive of all the airlines studied.

It also found that Ryanair has raised its charge to £4, up from £2 a year ago, while Easyjet, which used to charge 1.95 per cent of the total now charges 2.5 per cent.

James Freemantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council told the publication that different airlines used different charging systems and that the council believed card charges should be passed on as a percentage.

Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that the problem of credit card fraud is "particularly acute" for smaller retailers.

It said they may lack the resources and time to stay updated about security threats.
