More cards signed up to security measures

An increasing number of cards are being registered with anti-fraud protection measures, according to UK payments association Apacs.

Its figures show that more than 25 million UK-issued credit and debit cards have now been signed up to MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa.

These online payment systems make internet shopping safer.

Over 1.5 million cards are registered every month, an increase of 650 per cent compared to two years ago.

Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, said the figures show that more than half of all online shoppers have now registered their cards and welcomed the news.

The system enables cardholders to choose a password which they enter while shopping online.

There is no need for any additional software.

Earlier this year, Apacs reported how the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit (DCPCU), a special police unit that combats cheque and card fraud in the UK, raided a counterfeit card factory in Birmingham.

Two people were arrested and charged with conspiracy to defraud.
