Abbey Credit Cards: Britons spending £8 billion for winter sun

More than 15 million people will spend a total of £8 billion in seeking the sun this winter, according to new research from Abbey Credit Cards.

The average cost of each break is £546 per person, of which £195 (36 per cent) will be funded by credit card.

People aged between 55 and 64 are the biggest spenders, comprising 44 per cent of the holidaymakers and with 25 per cent spending £1,000 or more.

Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, advised sun seekers to choose a fee free credit card, such as the Abbey Zero card, to avoid foreign exchange fees while abroad.

Abbey also listed some reasons why using a credit card is a sensible option for paying for a holiday.

It offers payment protection in case an operator or airline should fail to provide, such as in the collapse of XL, can offer a zero per cent foreign exchange fee, can be immediately cancelled and quickly replaced if lost or stolen and prevents the need for carrying large amounts of cash.

In related news, a spokesperson for HSBC has said that online payments are "extremely secure".

He said that of online payers, only a "very minor amount" have experienced fraud.
