RAC: Motoring costs up by 19%

The cost of running a car has increased by 19 per cent in the past year, new research from the RAC shows.
According to the breakdown service and insurance provider, it now costs £2,435 to keep the average family car running for 12 months in terms of fuel and car maintenance.
This is a £277 increase on 2007's figure.
Once car insurance, finance packages and depreciation are also accounted for, the annual cost is £6,133, an increase of £1,000 on last year.
As a result, 36 per cent of drivers are now considering buying a car that costs less to run, although 68 per cent of those polled said they would not switch to public transport unless it improved.
Last month, the AA reported that the gender gap in car insurance premiums has widened by 59 per cent since 2003.
Young men were found typically to pay twice as much for their first year of cover as their female counterparts.
