Energy customers overcharged, says watchdog

Millions of energy customers who pay estimated bills are being overcharged, a watchdog has claimed.

Consumer group Consumer Focus said one-third of households could be suffering from price increases that came into force after they used the energy.

Spokesperson Robert Hammond said that companies would receive a "very nice windfall" from such action.

Principal economist at consumer group Which? John Holmes told the Times: "It's like buying something from a shop and them coming back to you weeks later and saying 'the price has gone up, you owe us more money'."

The Energy Retail Association denied that suppliers are profiteering from the price hikes and urged consumers to send regular meter readings.

In related news, a survey by the Energy Saving Trust has found that one in three people would share a bath to save energy.

The Mirror reports the study, which also found that nearly half of people leave their televisions on standby at night, wasting £80,000 a year nationally.
