Direct Line Home Insurance: 10% of homes targeted by burglars in last five years

Burglars have made attempts on ten per cent of homes in the past five years, new research from Direct Line Home Insurance has found.

This means around 2.4 million homes in the UK have either been broken into or have obviously had someone try to do so.

Londoners are the most at risk with 13 per cent of them having suffered actual or attempted burglaries.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, warned that thieves may take advantage as night falls earlier.

He urged people to take security measures such as locking windows at night.

Earlier this month, Direct Line said there had been an increase in fuel thefts, driven by the credit crunch and petrol prices.

Thieves are using more sophisticated means to drain fuel from new cars, such as drilling holes in the petrol tanks.

Direct Line noted that fuel tank damage could cost thousands of pounds to repair and advised motorists to keep cars in locked garages or well-lit areas.

They were also told to check their insurance covers damage caused by fuel thieves.
