How to improve your credit score

Advice on improving one's credit history has been given in the pages of the Independent.

Nargis Ahmad and Julian Knight warned that in the current economic turmoil, a high credit score is even more important and reported that some factors are now being considered more carefully by lenders than in the past.

Consumers are warned not to forget to pay their mobile phone or monthly catalogue bills, as well as not missing payments on credit cards or mortgages.

Beccy Bowden Wilks from National Debtline recommended paying off credit card bills in full every month and suggested having their limits reduced if they are not often used.

"Or alternatively cut them up and cancel them," she said.

Multiple applications for products requiring credit checks, such as mobile or cable and satellite television can also make lenders wary.

Readers were also warned that county court judgments and bankruptcies stay on file for six years.

People with savings in credit unions were recently told their money is safe.

Mark Lyonette, head of the Association of British Credit Unions, said such organisations do not rely on borrowing from the international money markets.
