Contract phone customers 'want to switch'

More than a third (36 per cent) of consumers on mobile phone contract tariffs would switch to a pay-as-you-go deal if they were not committed, a survey has found.

Family Mobile, partner to IKEA FAMILY, said that providers of contract phone services are deliberately marketing deals that do not benefit users.

It said that research has shown that a quarter of contract customers use just half of what they pay for each month.

Family Mobile also pointed out that many British providers carry 18-month contracts, whereas other European countries such as Finland legally prevent committing customers for more than six months.

Teddy Pederson, UK managing director of Family Mobile, said phone networks have a duty to responsible marketing and make sure that consumers do not pay too much.

Mobile device management technology provider Mformation Technologies recently said that phone users would be prepared to pay to be able to personalise their mobiles.

Commercial director Rob Dalgety stated research by the firm had found 86 per cent of respondents said personalising their devices would improve their experience and relationship with their provider.
