Skiers 'cannot claim on EHIC and should have insurance'

People going on skiing holidays have been warned that they will not be able to claim on their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in the case of an incident.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, explained that ski slopes have private medical centres.

As a result, skiers will not be able to use their EHICs if they need to use the centres and will instead receive a private bill.

Mr Trudgill added that according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), ski slopes are among the top five locations for injury while on holiday and the chances of getting hurt are therefore "very high".

He noted that even skilled skiers could be crashed into by other people.

Holders of an EHIC have the right to necessary healthcare during a temporary trip to European Economic Area countries or Switzerland.

Research by esure has found that 18 per cent of skiers would not buy travel insurance in order to cut back on costs.
