Confused.com: Consumers need to mitigate energy price hikes

Comparison website Confused.com has called on consumers to take action against energy price hikes after it was found that UK costs are rising twice as fast as the EU average.

Gas and electricity prices in the UK have increased by 29.7 per cent over the past 12 months, compared to 15 per cent in the EU.

In France, the increase is 14 per cent and in Germany, 12.2 per cent.

This is according to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Confused.com said in a statement that consumers need to "do as much as they can to mitigate the impact of these price rises".

This means shopping around for the cheapest and best deal and maximising on energy efficiency.

According to Confused.com, customers who switched gas and electricity suppliers through it have saved an average of £296 a year.

Ed Mayo, chief executive of government watchdog Consumer Focus, said that UK energy consumers are being "clobbered faster and harder than those in Europe".
