LV= Car Insurance: A quarter of motorists have suffered break-ins

Break-ins to cars are increasing with one quarter of motorists claiming to have been victims, according to new research by LV= Car Insurance.

Most drivers (80 per cent) have left valuables in their cars, which may be leading to the rise in such crimes.

The report found that items such as mobile phones and wallets are regularly left inside cars, to an average value of £380.

Emma Holyer of LV= Car Insurance warned that most car break-ins are by opportunist thieves and urged motorists to make sure their cover protects the loss of belongings in a car under such circumstances.

She stressed that valuables should not be left visible in a vehicle.

In May, LV= said it had removed "unfair admin charges" for its insurance customers.

It said this meant customers would not have to pay for such actions as changing cover levers or address.

A spokesperson said the insurer did not want to charge "hidden costs".
