Nationwide savings research shows future promise

Nationwide Building Society has conducted a study of people's saving habits and has revealed there are reasons to be optimistic about the frugal habit.

According to the survey, around three-quarters of consumers do not believe they are currently putting enough aside.

However, more than half (52 per cent) are confident that, six months down the line, they will be putting the right amount of money into their savings accounts.

The latest figures make for cheerful reading in comparison to those published last month, which showed that 47 per cent were feeling optimistic about saving in the near future.

"The current financial climate will have raised awareness about the importance of having savings, and we hope this, combined with joint industry and government education programmes, will encourage people to save regularly going forward," commented Michael Carter, director of savings at Nationwide.

Another institution, Birmingham Midshires, is currently running the Saving Britain campaign, aimed at promoting the saving habit among people in the UK.
