Consumer Focus welcomes decision on POCA

The government's decision to retain the Post Office card account (POCA) has been welcomed as a good move for consumers.

Richard Bates, head of community services at Consumer Focus, said the move would boost the viability of the post office network and allow customers to continue accessing their money in a convenient manner.

"People tell us they need the option to deposit money, pay bills and make savings in their POCA," he commented, adding: "The Government must now provide and promote these services."

Concerns had been raised that ending POCA could spell the end for many Post Office branches around the UK.

However, work and pensions minister James Purnell confimed that the Post Office would be awarded a new contract that will run from 2010 to March 2015.

Mr Purnell described the Post Office as a "trusted brand" and a "reliable provider of services".
