AA: Car insurance premiums could rise due to whiplash

AA insurance has warned that the increasing numbers of comprehensive car insurance policyholders who are making claims for whiplash could drive up the cost of insurance premiums.

Figures published today in a report by the Association of British insurers (ABI) in conjunction with the AA show that whiplash claims have increased by 25 per cent in the last five years.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance said that the average Shoparound car insurance premium had risen by 8.7 per cent in recent years and that whiplash claims could increasingly become a factor in causing further rises.

He said: "The cost of whiplash claims equates to about £66 for every UK car insurance policy, or about 14 per cent of the average Shoparound car insurance premium."

The ABI, which published the report, represents around 400 companies, or the majority of the UK's insurance providers.
