Abbey Home Insurance: Domestic burglaries expected to rise

Abbey Home Insurance has issued a warning to people not to try and save by cutting back on household contents insurance because burglaries are expected to rise with the onset of the recession.

According to Abbey's figures from the last recession, the number of domestic burglaries recorded by police in England and Wales rose by 33.8 per cent and Abbey Home Insurance believes that the trend may be repeated this time round.

Thierry Campet, the sales and marketing director at Abbey Insurance, said that the imminent recession and the worsening economic climate meant that the numbers of break-ins were likely to rise.

He added: "When household budgets tighten […] there are the usual outgoings that people feel they can cut back on.

"Wrongly, many people believe home insurance is one of these."

This news follows the revelations from Experian yesterday that car finance crime has risen by over 30 per cent in the space of three months.
