Direct Line: Brits will spend more on presents this Christmas

Direct Line Home Insurance has conducted a survey which shows that many Brits will spend more on Christmas presents this year than in 2007, despite the credit crunch.

Of those surveyed, 16 per cent said they would be spending more on presents while 58 per cent said they would spend about the same amount.

Direct Line's study also looked at the differing attitudes of men and women to Christmas shopping, finding that women bought an average of 12 presents, whereas men bought just eight.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, commented on the trend for bargain hunting by both sexes this year.

He said: "As ever, the nation is fully embracing this year's Christmas festivities. However, for many buying gifts, it means shopping much smarter to get the most for their money."

Although a recent survey by Moneywise.co.uk revealed that women worried more about the credit crunch than men, Direct Line's results suggest that worrying will not stop women buying more presents this Christmas.
