Nationwide welcomes government's mortgage lending proposals

Nationwide has welcomed the proposals for mortgage lenders announced by the government yesterday in its pre-Budget report (PBR).

According to the mortgage provider, the creation of a lending panel, which was one of the proposals put forward by Alistair Darling, will benefit both borrowers and lenders.

Nationwide also welcomed the introduction of a moratorium on repossessions, saying it was already company policy not to take houses away unless three months' worth of repayments had not been met.

Graham Beale, chief executive of Nationwide, said: "We have entered a very difficult market environment for both consumers and lenders.

"It is imperative that all interested stakeholders work together to find ways, wherever possible, to keep people in their homes," he added.

A range of other measures aimed at stimulating the economy were also announced in the PBR, including a cut in VAT from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent, which could give consumers more disposable income.
