Age Concern: Pensioners worry about cold winter

Age Concern has conducted a survey which reveals that two-thirds of old people in the UK are worried about staying warm and well this winter.

More than half of pensioners are cutting back on food because of the increased cost of living and, with the increases in the price of energy earlier this year, Age Concern is seriously worried about more pensioners dying from the cold this winter.

According to the Office for National Statistics there were 22,400 excess winter deaths of old people last year, the highest rate in Europe.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said: "With this winter set to be colder than last, the numbers [of excess deaths] are likely to rise.

"Yet, the impact of increased energy bills is causing thousands to risk their health by cutting back on heating."

Age Concern welcomed the government's pre-Budget report proposals to increase the funding for their Warm Front scheme, which is designed to help poorer people save money on energy costs.

But the charity added that the scheme may not make enough of a difference.
