Nationwide savings accounts are safest, new poll says

A new poll released today has revealed that Nationwide savings accounts are trusted as the safest haven for money by UK savers.

The research, conducted by independent price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, revealed that one in seven people would trust Nationwide with their money if they were given £50,000 to invest for at least a year.

Abbey was revealed as savers' second choice, one percentage point behind, while the Post Office and HSBC came third and fourth respectively.

Nationwide's savings director Matthew Carter said: "We're delighted consumers recognise the strength and stability of Nationwide and how we are a safe haven for their savings."

He added that in unstable financial times, savers were increasingly seeing the benefits of being with a mutual as opposed to a conventional bank.

Last week Nationwide announced that it would cut the rates of interest it offered to its savers by as much as 1.6 per cent on some accounts.
