DWP releases benefits report

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced the release of a report which looks at how best to help unemployed people get back into work.

Entitled Realising Potential, the report argues that benefits claimants must be treated as individuals and empowered and encouraged to find their own route back into working life.

In the report, professor Paul Gregg of Bristol University argues that the UK's conditional system of benefits is one of the world's most effective, but suggests making sanctions quicker and easier to implement against those who repeatedly break the rules.

Secretary of state for work and pensions James Purnell said: "These issues matter now more than ever - when jobs are harder to find, we need to invest in those people who will one day be back in work."

Last month the Pensions Act 2008, designed by Mr Purnell's department, received royal assent.

The act makes it illegal for employers not to offer pension schemes to their workers.
