Halifax Home Insurance issues warning to homeowners

Halifax Home Insurance has issued a warning to homeowners to prepare for cold weather by winter-proofing their homes.

The insurer said that 20,000 people had needed broken or frozen pipes fixing last winter, each of which cost an average of £2,000 to fix.

According to Halifax Home Insurance's data there were some 30,000 claims for storm damage last year which cost a total of £17 million to put right.

The insurer warned homeowners to check the condition of their roofs, repair them if necessary and clear the gutters and drain pipes, to minimise the strain put on them by the winter weather.

David Rochester from Halifax Home Insurance said: "With home emergencies, prevention is certainly better than the cure, and much of the damage could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the bad weather."

Last month Confused.com warned motorists to be especially careful about checking the condition of their cars before driving in cold weather.
