Direct Line Insurance: House fires increase over Christmas

Families have been warned by Direct Line Insurance to be particularly vigilant against the risk of fire over Christmas.

The insurer is expecting the number of claims it receives relating to house fires to increase over the festive period.

In December last year, it received 61 per cent more claims than it did during the average summer month.

"With over 45,000 accidental house fires every year causing millions of pounds worth of damage coupled with the risk of death and injury, it is essential that all householders work to minimise fire risks in the home," said Andrew Lowe, Head of Direct Line Home Insurance.

Candles, unattended cookers, faulty Christmas lights and smoking indoors are among the biggest fire risks for this time of year, the provider warned.

Recently, Abbey suggested that home insurance is particularly important during an economic downturn, as the number of domestic burglaries may also increase.
