Credit crunch 'leaves millions facing financial meltdown'

The extent of the financial problems resulting from the credit crunch has been uncovered in new research by AXA.

According to findings of a YouGov poll for the organisation's My Budget Day campaign, 11.6 million people, or a quarter of the UK population, say they are "not in control" financially.

Of this group of people, 54 per cent (6,150,298 people) have no savings, 33 per cent (3,754,344 people) cannot cope with their credit card bills and nine per cent (1,021,637 people) cannot stay on top of their mortgage payments.

Steve Folkard, spokesperson for My Budget Day, warned people not to ignore their financial struggles.

"The more aware you are of your problems and the more in tune to your financial situation you are, the better your chances of coming out the other end in good shape," he said.

Recently, AXA research uncovered "the price of everything".

Its YouGov poll found that, taking into account everything such as accommodation, groceries, holidays and more, a 25-year-old will need £1,545,594,735 for an average living standard while a 55-year-old requires £623,890.20.
