NS&I: Brits still saving, despite banking crisis

People in the UK are still putting money into savings accounts, despite the very public collapse of several banks recently, a new survey has revealed.

According to the poll, conducted by National Savings and Investments (NS&I), 47 per cent of the population has managed to put aside money during the last quarter, a figure which has remained constant for the last three quarters.

However the survey suggests that this amount may fall, with 45 per cent of respondents thinking that they are less likely to put money aside during the coming months, compared to 33 per cent last year.

Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist from NS&I, said: "The downward trend in savings over time is worrying as more than a third of savers currently do not have enough in savings to cover an emergency."

Recently, a study by LV= found that 30 per cent of Brits would not have enough money set aside to survive longer than two months if they were out of work.
