Legal & General: Houses may not be as safe as they seem

Legal & General have released the results of research which reveals that, while many people taking more care over home security, a basic lack of maintenance means that many houses may not be as safe as their owners think.

According to the study, nearly 90 per cent of homes in the UK have a smoke alarm but more than one in ten people admit to not repairing alarms when they break.

Nearly 40 per cent of people said they had an intruder alarm fitted, but of those, less than half have actually checked whether the alarm works.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications for Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "Although 76 per cent stated that they feel just as safe in their home as they did five years ago, if people are not checking their safety and security measures, they may not be as safe as they think."

A recent study published by Norwich Union's home insurance division predicted that burglaries would rise over the festive period.
