Norwich Union: Young drivers pay for buying cheap cars

Norwich Union has released the results of a survey which show that young drivers who buy cheap cars may eventually pay a higher price as they are more likely to have accidents.

According to the car insurance provider, more than half of drivers under the age of 21 spend less than £500 on their first car and cars under that price are much less likely to have key safety features like airbags and anti-lock braking systems.

Norwich Union's data shows that drivers are more than twice as likely to be injured by accidents in a ten-year-old car than in a new one.

Nigel Bartram, underwriting strategy manager for Norwich Union, said he advised parents "to do everything they can to give their children the best possible chance of staying in one piece on the nation's roads by ensuring they […] purchase a safe, road worthy vehicle".

Recently the AA warned that the number of accidents could increase in the coming months as wintery weather makes driving more dangerous.
