LV= discovered that more than two-thirds of children in the UK are clued up on he credit crunch and over a quarter of those who believe in Santa think that even his Christmas will be made less jolly this year by the effects of the economic downturn.
At the same time just under half the children surveyed said they are expecting fewer or cheaper presents from their parents this year.
Mike Rogers, LV= group chief executive, said: "Children are surprisingly clued up about the credit crunch and the impact it is having on Christmas.
"Many younger children who still believe in Father Christmas expect even him to be feeling the pinch this year."
Some relief may yet be in store for the old elf's parent proxies, as a survey by Halifax recently revealed that the prices of many popular present items such as toys and clothes have fallen recently.
