Norwich Union: Insurance claims increase over festive period

The number of domestic insurance claims tends to rise over the Christmas and New Year period, according to new statistics released by Norwich Union today.

Norwich Union's data revealed that claims for fires in the home increase by 140 per cent on Christmas day compared with the rest of the year, as people battle with cooking, candles or Christmas-tree lights.

The insurer also found that New Year's Eve is a bad time for home insurance claims, with claims for fire 90 per cent higher than average and claims for accidental damage 30 per cent above the norm.

Greg Gladwell, director of household claims at Norwich Union, said: "Of course insurance is there to pay out when the worst happens, but anything we can do to prevent disruption in the home in the first place has to be a good thing."

Recently a separate survey, conducted by Abbey Home Insurance, revealed that the recession is likely to cause a rise in the number of burglaries.
