Zurich: Boat burglaries on the rise

Zurich has issued a warning to all boat owners to be careful that their craft is insured even over the winter months as the economic downturn is causing an increase in boat burglaries.

According to the Switzerland-based insurer, opportunistic thieves have been stealing easily transportable items such as outboard motors, dinghies, stereos and navigation equipment from boats, because winter boat storage facilities are often poorly guarded and are not covered by CCTV.

Zurich said that many boat owners do not insure their boats over the winter period as they believe they are not at risk when they’re not being used.

James Roberts, head of Navigators & General, Zurich boat insurance division, said: "With boat theft increasing by a fifth this year, we wanted to warn boat owners to try and minimise temptation to opportunist thieves by removing items from their boat, where possible."

Recently the AA warned customers to be extra careful about their cars at this time of year, as Christmas presents left out on seats cause an increase in the number of car break-ins over the festive period.
