Credit cards 'being used to pay rent by Welsh tenants'

Thousands of tenants in England are using their credit cards to pay their rent, it has been claimed.

According to the Liberal Democrats, who obtained the data under the Freedom of Information Act, more than 3,000 tenants are relying on their credit cards to pay the rent on their properties.

Meanwhile, the figures showed that around £1.6 million worth of rent paid by credit cards to local authorities in Wales.

The Lib Dems' housing spokeswoman Sarah Teather said the government was responsible for ignoring the problem.

Chris Tapp, director of debt advice charity Credit Action, commented: "It's a trigger for someone experiencing serious financial difficulties if they are making payments for essentials, like rent, on credit cards."

Earlier this month, Credit Action claimed that the amount of personal debt in the UK increased during 2008, while the amount of consumer credit lent to individuals amounted to £234 billion.
