Abbey: Credit crunch brings out spirit of the blitz

Abbey has released the results of new research which shows that the credit crunch is bringing out the spirit of the World War II blitz in UK families, as people search around for ways to cut costs.

The research, conducted by cahoots, found that Brits believe they can save an estimated £18 billion in total by sharing the cost of living with friends and family.

Cahoots found that 39 per cent of people in the UK are spending more time at home with their families rather than out socialising and 19 per cent are having more family mealtimes together to save on cooking costs.

Matthew Timms, head of cahoots, said: "Staying in really has become the new going out as we seek to cut costs by conducting more shared activities inside the home with family and friends."

Recent research by Abbey Insurance showed that many Brits are reverting to the old habit of hoarding their cash "under the mattress" at home as the distrust of banks and bankers becomes more widespread.
