AA: Brits left depressed by 'Blue Monday'

The AA has told Brits to cheer-up today as January 19th is traditionally reckoned to be the worst day of the whole year for depression.

Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University, calculated that the Monday in mid-January would be the worst day for people in the UK using an equation which considers weather, debt, time since Christmas, time since failing our new year's resolutions, low motivational levels and the feeling of a need to take action.

The AA also warned that car drivers could face increased danger on the roads as a result of wintery conditions, but Edmund King, the organisation's president, said there are still some reasons to be cheerful.

He added: "This time of year can be gloomy and depressing, but at least this Monday is a little less blue than it was last year if you are filling up your tank.

"The AA suggests drivers use some of their fuel savings to cheer themselves up."

Recently, Norwich Union issued a warning to drivers to take extra care as January sees a higher number of road accident claims than any other month of the year.
