Asda announces new jobs

Asda Financial services announced today that the supermarket chain will employ several thousand new workers in 2009, despite the fact that many other companies are laying off workers.

The company said that extensions to existing supermarkets and the building of brand new stores will create 3,700 new jobs, while a further 2,000 jobs will be created through the expansion of its online shopping business.

Organic growth will provide 1,000 new jobs, according to Asda and its speciality businesses would employ an extra 120 people nationwide.

Andy Bond, president and chief executive of the supermarket, said: "This year we will create 7,000 new jobs at a time when many companies are having to lay people off.

"We will also be helping 3,000 long-term unemployed get back into work by specifically targeting them for existing vacancies in our business."

Asda has been a beneficiary of the so-called Aldi Effect recently, as shoppers turn to budget supermarkets for their groceries during the credit crunch.
