Price comparison sites respond to Which? investigation

Some car insurance price comparison websites have responded angrily to the conclusions drawn by Which? following its investigation into the way they display information.

Gocompare.com, a website that Which? singled out for criticism, told the consumer magazine to "stick to reviewing washing machines".

Which? said its researchers found that Gocompare.com changed the amount they entered as a voluntary excess in order to return cheaper quotes from some of the listed insurers.

Another price comparison site, moneysupermarket.com, claimed that "a new version of our motor insurance comparison tool" had eliminated the problems identified by the magazine.

Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com, said that his company had also addressed the issue that the investigation identified.

Recently, a BBC panorama investigation also identified some problems with the information provided by several price comparison sites.

It found that some insurers were paying sites commission to pass on business, a practice which could lead to a skewing of the results given to users.
