ABI issues insurance advice to beat the bad weather

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued advice to customers looking to claim on insurance because of the disruption caused by the heavy snowfall currently affecting many parts of the UK.

According to the ABI, people intending to travel should check their documents carefully as many travel insurance policies do not cover flight cancellation costs due to bad weather.

The insurance industry body also warned that car insurance policies may not cover the cost of breakdowns or cars that fail to start because of the cold.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Severe weather conditions cause great disruption and inconvenience.

"People who have suffered flight delays or damage to their home or vehicle due to the weather should contact their insurance company for advice."

Recently Norwich Union released data which suggested that January will see more car accident claims than any other month of the year, thanks to the bad wintery weather.
