Brits ignorant about incapacity benefits, says survey

A survey has revealed that many Brits do not know how much they would receive from the government if they were unable to work because of illness or injury.

The poll, conducted by Nationwide, found that 88 per cent of people did not know how much the state incapacity benefit amounts to.

Although 32 per cent of people told the building society they would rely on state benefits if they were injured, 98 per cent of said they would need more than £100 a week to survive and the maximum state incapacity benefit is currently £89.50 a week.

Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, said: "Most people believe they will find a way to survive should injury or illness force them out of work.

"However, in the current economic climate, we may not be able to rely on such things as the value of our house, or even friends and relatives in the way that we did a year ago."

LV= conducted research recently which showed that 26 per cent of adults have no savings they could fall back on if they were injured.
