Nationwide: Illness or injury would leave Brits struggling

Nationwide has released the results of a survey which show that illness or incapacitating injury would leave most Brits struggling to survive financially.

The building society calculated that homeowners need an average of £298.66 a week to survive financially and found that 3 out of 5 of the people it surveyed said they would struggle to find this if they were out of work because of injury or illness.

While 49 per cent of those surveyed said they would rely on savings to help them, Nationwide's latest study of savings revealed that less than half of people in the UK save regularly.

Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, said: "The results are illuminating. It clearly shows that, should the unexpected happen, most people do not have any cover in place."

A recent study by Zurich revealed that single people may be particularly at risk of struggling financially because they do not have a partner to support them.
