AA experiences a blizzard of insurance claims

The heavy snowfall affecting many parts of the UK yesterday meant that the AA's car insurance call centres were nearly snowed under with car insurance claims.

Simon Douglas, a spokesperson for the organisation, said that by 10:00 yesterday they had experienced 30 per cent more calls about insurance claims than on a normal morning.

This figure increased to 50 per cent more than normal by mid-afternoon, as many drivers reported losing control on slippery roads and crashing into trees, lampposts and each other.

Mr Douglas added: "Many drivers are completely unused to driving in snow and ice and inevitably the claims are blowing in with the same force as the blizzards."

The high numbers of claims recorded came despite the fact that public transport cancellations meant that many people were given the day off yesterday and so were not driving to or from work.
