ONS: Unemployment on the rise

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that unemployment is on the rise in the UK, as the recession continues to bite.

According to its monthly report, the unemployment rate was 6.3 per cent in the final quarter of 2008, an increase of 0.4 per cent on the previous three-month period.

The number of people out of work rose by 146,000 to 1.97 million over the same period, which represents and increase of 390,000 on the last year's figures.

At the same time, the ONS calculated that the number of available vacancies fell by 76,000 in the last quarter of 2008, to 504,000.

In recent days several companies have announced that they will lay off workers. Yesterday the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) announced that it would cut 2,300 jobs in order to make savings.

Earlier in the day, the former head of RBS, Sir Fred Godwin, had apologised to MPs for the part his management had played in the financial crisis.
