Cheshire Building Society: Recession need not wreck romance

Cheshire Building Society has claimed that the economic downturn need not wreck the romance of Valentine's Day and has compiled a list of top romantic tips for recession-hit Romeos.

The building society's list includes cooking a meal for partners at home instead of splashing out on a restaurant dinner, or having a picnic in the park if the weather turns out to be bright.

Cheshire Building Society advised couples not to let financial issues stand in the way of true love or thoughtful gift-giving.

It quoted the relationship counsellors firm Relate, which reported a 60 per cent increase in the number of couples seeking guidance in October and November 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.

The Cheshire said: "Differing budgets can cause conflict: setting a low budget and sticking to it can encourage creativity when buying presents without burning a hole in your pocket."

Recent research by PayPal showed the number of couples who admitted to having arguments had increased by 32 per cent, with money issues being one of the major causes.
