Abbey: Romance is credit crunch's latest casualty

Abbey has claimed that romance may be dead thanks to the credit crunch, which will cause Brits to cut back on the amount they spend on celebrating Valentine's Day.

The bank conducted a survey which showed that although more than half of people in the UK will be celebrating Valentine's Day, nearly four in ten of them will be reducing the amount they spend on their partners.

Abbey said that recession may leave the restaurant industry lovelorn and lonely this year as five million Brits will be opting to eat in rather than head out for dinner.

Susan Voase, Abbey banking spokesperson, said: "Cash-strapped Britons will be hoping that it's still the thought that counts as they turn to more cost-effective ways to show their love this Valentine's Day."

Romantic restaurant meals may be the latest casualty in a trend identified recently by Birmingham Midshires, which conducted a survey showing that Brits are spending less of their savings on luxuries.
