Women 'cut back on Valentine's Day spending'

Research by moneysupermarket.com has revealed that women will be cutting back on the amount they spend this Valentine's Day in greater numbers than men.

The price comparison website found that 22 per cent of the women it surveyed will be making cutbacks, compared to 16 per cent of men.

Moneysupermarket.com also found that 20 per cent of men claim they will increase the amount they spend on their partners this year, leading the website to predict that this year could see a return to more traditional, female-orientated Valentine's Day celebrations.

Clare Francis, site editor at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It's nice to see Miss and Mrs Valentine still doing really well despite the recession.

"Saint Valentine clearly still has his work cut out though with a big spend required on February 14."

Research by Birmingham Midshires recently revealed that overall, Brits are cutting back on the amount they withdraw from savings accounts to spend on luxuries like eating out.
