Citizens Advice given extra funding

Citizens Advice has been granted £10 million in extra funding from the government to deal with an upsurge in the number of enquiries caused by the credit crunch.

The organisation claimed that last financial year it dealt with 5.54 million queries concerning issues such as redundancy, benefit entitlements and mortgage and loans arrears.

It saw a 125 per cent increase in redundancy enquiries between April and November 2008 and daily enquiries about jobseekers allowance rose by 66 per cent over the same period.

David Harker, chief executive of Citizens Advice, said: "As people […] are struggling to make ends meet at a time of increasing uncertainty about the security of their jobs and incomes, access to reliable, high-quality, free, independent advice has never been more vital."

Figures published recently by the Office for National Statistics revealed that nearly two million people in the UK are currently unemployed.
