Brits ditch 'expensive' 4x4s

Which? Car magazine has claimed that many Brits are increasingly ditching their 4x4s in favour of smaller, less expensive models thanks to the credit crunch.

The consumer magazine claimed that the "once healthy" market for jeeps and other luxury cars has "virtually collapsed" as people in the UK look to downsize in order to save on tax and fuel costs.

Which? also claimed that driving a 4x4 is seen as increasingly socially unacceptable in a country that is more and more concerned about climate change.

Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car, said: "Times are hard, so it's no surprise that people are downsizing to save money.

"It pays to think carefully about alternatives to the mainstream choices and if you go for a more fuel-efficient car you can cut costs for years to come."

Recent research by the AA revealed that more people are now buying second-hand cars instead of brand new ones in an effort to make further savings.
