Egg reveals trend for self-sufficiency

Egg has revealed that an increasing number of people in the UK are becoming more self-sufficient as they seek to combat the effects of the recession.

According to research by the company, 23 per cent of people now have vegetable patches in their garden - and four per cent raise chickens.

Furthermore, 19 per cent are cutting their own hair, while one in ten women are making their own clothes.

"It's interesting to see that people across the country are going back to basics and adopting imaginative do-it-yourself savings techniques," Patrick Muir, spokesperson for Egg, said.

Meanwhile, Egg has suggested that many Britons are not taking advantage of the best savings deal around.

A survey by the firm revealed that 69 per cent of savers do not look to switch accounts to other providers - and, as such, could be missing out on competitive rates.
