Saga Medical Insurance highlights motivations for quitting smoking

Saga Private Medical Insurance has revealed the results of a new survey of over-50s on the reasons why they would consider giving up smoking.

According to the poll, the most popular motivation for quitting cigarettes is staying fit, with 34 per cent claiming this to be the case.

"Being fit is one of the top priorities for the older generation and stopping smoking is a key factor in achieving such a goal," said Andrew Goodsell, chief executive at Saga Group.

The health of younger ones, such as grandchildren, was a driving factor for 16 per cent of older smokers.

Saga revealed that nine per cent of over-50s smoke - and 12 per cent of that proportion refuse to quit. The ban on smoking in public places seems to have had little influence, with only three per cent giving up the habit following the change.

Earlier this week, Saga advised that insurers who are unwilling to protect older people should refer them to companies who will.
