Sainsbury's Pet Insurance: Rottweilers are the costliest breed to cover

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance has released figures which suggest that rottweilers are the most expensive breed of dog to own in terms of insurance costs.

According to an analysis of its claims data, the supermarket financial services provider calculated that the average treatment cost for a rottweiler is £441, which is 32 per cent higher than the average treatment cost for all pedigree dogs.

Sainsbury's Pet Insurance calculated that the cheapest pedigree dog to own could be the West Highland white, as average treatment costs for this breed amount to £271.

Neal Devine, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance manager, said: "Many people don't consider the likely difference in cost between different breeds before buying a pet. We would urge people to look at all the costs they could face."

Pet buyers may want to consider buying a sealyham terrier after one such dog called Charmin took the prize for best in show at Crufts over the weekend.
