Abbey: Savings account earnings may persuade smokers to quit

Abbey has found another reason for people to give up smoking - they could save themselves a combined total of £1.57 billion a year by kicking the habit.

The bank calculated that the average smoker burns their way through 16 cigarettes a day, or around 300 packs per year, which costs them £130.81 each month.

Abbey calculated that by depositing this money in one of their regular savings accounts instead of letting it go up in smoke, people could save themselves £1,740.21 over the course of one year.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments at Abbey, said: "Smoking is clearly dragging down our savings potential. […] Smart ex-smokers will make sure they swap ash for cash by putting the money into savings accounts."

March 11th will be No Smoking Day, an annual event in which smokers are encouraged to pack it in.
