Petplan: Pet insurance policies should not be cut

Petplan has urged customers not to cut the amount they spend on insuring their pets as a way of saving money during the recession.

According to the pet insurance provider, cancelling pet insurance policies or reducing the amount of cover they include could leave animal owners facing greater problems.

Alison Andrew, marketing manager from Petplan, said that some of the most common ailments affecting domestic animals like dogs are recurring problems such as glaucoma, which can cost around £1,000 a year to treat.

She added: "It's genuinely worrying to us when we hear people talking about cutting insurance as a moneysaving tip, because we understand the heartbreak people can suffer if they suddenly find they can't afford to treat their pet any more."

Petplan began offering pet insurance in 1976. It has been part of the Allianz Global Group, which also includes Cornhill insurance, since 1996.
