£154 billion worth of household goods left uninsured, says survey

Research released by uSwitch.com has revealed that homeowners in the UK have left around £154 million worth of goods uninsured in their properties.

A poll conducted by the website showed that 18 per cent of houses in the UK are not covered by home contents insurance policies, meaning around 3.9 million occupiers could be putting their possessions at risk.

Nearly half of those who are currently uninsured blame the current economic climate, claiming that they cannot afford household contents insurance at the moment.

Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "The fact that nearly half of homeowners and renters alike don't feel they can afford home contents insurance at the moment is a worrying sign of the times."

Recent research by Abbey suggested that the number of domestic burglaries is likely to rise this year because of the ongoing recession.
